Before he joined Gasunie, Marcel previously worked at Essent in power and natural gas sales and trading. Since 2003 Marcel has been working for Gasunie in Business Development.

He has been commercially involved in the startup of BBL Company which operates the pipeline connection between The Netherlands and UK.

He has worked on the establishment of Gate,  the joint venture of Gasunie and Vopak, early 2005. At Gate he negotiated the commercial contracts with the Gate terminal users and subsequently the terminal commissioning agreement with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. For this deal Merrill was awarded “Energy Risk Deals of the year 2012”.  

Since 2012 Marcel has been involved in developing the commercial framework for small scale LNG services at Gate for which Shell was contracted as launching customer. This resulted in the final investment decision in 2014 to build additional dedicated infrastructure for small LNG vessels at Gate.

In 2015 Marcel started the development of the first land based LNG terminal in Germany in Brunsbüttel, German LNG Terminal GmbH (GLNG). GLNG with its shareholders Gasunie, KfW (German State owned investment and development bank) and RWE, start operations in 2027. Launching customers are ConocoPhillips, Ineos and RWE Supply & Trading.

With the FSRU deal ‘Eemshaven LNG’ in March 2022, between Belgian maritime and offshore solutions provider Exmar and Gasunie, Marcel contributed to the commercial launch of the Eemshaven Energy Terminal. The short time to market and first FSRU project in The Netherlands.

Marcel is also member of the IGU working group “LNG”.
